Our Editorial Board continually works to review our process in order to showcase the diverse student body that can be found at Clarke Central High School. The iliad encourages the community to express any comments or concerns regarding our commitment to diversity. Achieving our goal is an ongoing process and, as an Editorial Board, we pride ourselves on not only diversity but listening respectfully to students who come from different backgrounds. It's our duty as a school publication to represent the CCHS’s student body as a whole.

The iliad literary-art magazine was started in 1969, but after many years the magazine went dormant. Refounded in 2001, the iliad has served as an outlet of expression and group dedicated to collaboration and growth for the student body. While iliad has been a part of CCHS for almost two decades, in the past 20 years, much progress has been made and change has been encountered.

What is the iliad literary-art magazine?

The iliad Literary-Art Magazine is an annually published, student-produced literary-art magazine. The publication features art, photography and writing created and submitted by members of the Clarke Central High School community. Each issue is an open public forum for student expression under the guidance of a student-led Editorial Board and a faculty adviser.


What happens at iliad club meetings?

Club meetings take place on September 10, October 1, November 12, December 10, January 7, February 4, March 4, and April 1, from 7:45 a.m. to 8:30 a.m. in Room 231. Each club meeting is focused on the creation of a specific type of content. Throughout the school year, attendees will have the opportunity to learn about and practice photography, design, writing and other forms of creativity. Additionally, club meetings are devoted to check-ins regarding the progress of the iliad magazine and brand.

What do members do?

iliad club members are content creators. Club meetings act as a safe space for artists and writers to explore varying creative fields while producing pieces that could be used in the magazine. All students, regardless of artistic or writing experience, are encouraged to attend club meetings. The art and writing generated at club meetings will be considered for publication in the iliad.  In addition to content creation, club members are asked to promote the iliad and encourage submissions from other CCHS students.


How do I become a member?

Any CCHS student can attend club meetings on September 10, October 1, November 12, and December 10, from 7:45 a.m. to 8:30 a.m. Members are asked to attend the entirety of the sessions they choose to attend. To be considered an official member, students must not miss more than two meetings per semester.


When is the magazine distributed?

The iliad is published annually and mailed to patrons and student contributors in May, prior to the end of the school year. Additional copies of the magazine are handed out at the iliad Creative Celebration. This event is open to all published creators and their families, patrons and faculty at CCHS. Additionally, when finalized, the magazine is uploaded to issuu, where anyone with the link can access it.


Who can submit?
Any member of the CCHS community and eighth-graders from Clarke Middle School and Burney-Harris-Lyons Middle School can submit their work to the iliad. The magazine is typically composed of student-produced work, however, CCHS faculty members are also welcome to submit to the magazine.


How do I submit?

To submit, students are required to fill out an online submission form found at bit.ly/iliad24. If a student is submitting photography or written work, there is a space available to attach work. Physical work, such as art or sculptures, will be photographed or scanned. In order to do so, please contact iliadLT@odysseynewsmagazine.net


What can I submit?

We are open to any art or written submissions. Artwork can be in any medium (acrylic, oil, sculpture, graphics, etc.) We accept a wide variety of creative writing such as poems, short stories, scripts, monologues and essays. In the iliad, we encourage outside-of-the-box submissions. In the past, we have included sheet music, sculptures, poems written in foreign languages, tweet series and macrame/knit works. We look for any expression of student creativity to promote a safe space for all voices and visions.


How many pieces can I submit?

Creators can submit an unlimited number of pieces. However, only two pieces from any one creator can be featured in the magazine. 


How are submissions decided upon?

Submissions are reviewed by the members of the Editorial Board and selected based on the theme of the magazine, the quality of the content, the grade level and the piece’s ability to pair with other forms of creative work.


What is the Editorial Board?

The Editorial Board is a group of iliad editors who work on the production of the magazine. The positions include Social Media Coordinator, Outreach Director, Business Manager, Visuals Director, Writing Director, Managing Editor and Editor-in-Chief. Some members of the EdBoard are a part of the ODYSSEY Media Group/iliad Literary-Art Magazine production class to support their iliad work. The Editorial Board meets once a week to work on the behind-the-scenes of iliad and help make decisions on magazine themes, selected pieces, as well as representing the iliad at community events.


What are Editorial Board Meetings and when are they?

The Editorial Board Meetings are held every Tuesday morning from 7:45-8:30 a.m. These meetings are for editors to discuss deadlines, plan magazine production, track progress and brainstorm fundraisers.


How do I apply to be an Editor? 

Applications to be a part of the iliad Editorial Board are released in May and are announced on social media platforms and the CCHS school announcements. Applicants will be required to complete a written application and complete a follow-up interview with members of the Leadership Team and Mr. Ragsdale. Positions are decided on and released in May via email.
